The Brief
We have started this company to complete a project for Microsoft's Design Expo 2009, if our ideas are original enough we could be heading to Seattle in mid July. So the heat is on!
The theme this year is 'new ways of working'. Here at Dundee University the theme has been interpreted to consider older people.
Important demographic changes are happening, not just in Scotland, but all around the world. Issues such as:
- people are staying active much longer after retirement
-jobs tend to be less physical, and people are reluctant to retire
-employers are increasingly aware of knowledge, experience and wisdom that is lost when people leave companies.
- Older people are still very independent and wish to travel more in retirement to visit remote family which requires money.
- at the same time, an aging population means there are less people in work whose taxes can support state pensions
All of these suggest that we may end up needing to, or wanting to, carry on working beyond the current retirement age. So new ways of working is both relevant to our grandparents generation and ours.
